Virginia State Police field 244 calls for service on the road Friday

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Between 6 and 10 a.m. on Friday, Virginia State Police dispatchers across the state fielded 244 calls for service.

During that same time period, state troopers responded to 74 traffic crashes and 52 disabled vehicles. As of 11 a.m., state troopers are on scene of 24 traffic crashes statewide.

Police went ahead and broke down crashes per areas of the Commonwealth:

Division VII – Fairfax (Prince William/Loudoun/Arlington/Alexandria/Fairfax) experienced: Traffic Crashes=6 Disabled Vehicles=10.

A Johns Hopkins team designed an Ebola suit so good, it’s going on the market

Youseph Yazdi was surprised by the number of people who jumped in to help design better protective gear for people helping Ebola victims – everyone from freshmen to robotics experts to a wedding-dress maker.

But he was even more surprised when the solutions the team came up with at the hackathon at Johns Hopkins University attracted the notice of leading producers of protective clothing. A version of the suit they designed will be manufactured by DuPont and available early next year, the university announced Monday.

VA Attorney General Outlines New Policing Initiative

- A top state official in Virginia is kicking off a new plan to update methods for safe and effective policing.

Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring along with two Northern Virginia police chiefs and the Commonwealth’s head of Homeland Security announced the launch of a training initiative for police recruits and veteran officers.

Leesburg Volunteer Fire Department to Host Open House Saturday

The Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company will hold their annual Fire Prevention Open House on Saturday, October 3 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Fire Station 20, located at 61 Plaza Street, NE. There will be a variety of educational fire safety activities, fire equipment and apparatus will be on display and there will be fun for the whole family. Kicking off National Fire Prevention week from October 4-10, this event will promote the 2015 theme, “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep – Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm!”

NVERS Becomes a Non-Profit

We are pleased to announce NVERS' IRS 1023 application for 501(c)3 status was approved by the IRS (April 2015).  Based on guidance from the IRS and the experience of our advisors, we were prepared for this process to take up to 2 years and consist of multiple back-and-forth question/answer sessions with the IRS.  Apparently, the application was detailed and clear enough the IRS was able to approve it in 47 days.  This is the fastest approval turn-around anyone we have spoken with has ever heard of.
