In its simplest form, the Patient Tracking System (PTS) project was created to address the need to accurately log and track patients from the scene of a mass casualty incident to area hospitals, within Northern Virginia and the National Capital Region (NCR) Region. Northern Virginia’s PTS is also linked to similar efforts in Washington, DC and Maryland, to provide greater coordination across the NCR. Additionally, PTS is integrated with each agency’s electronic patient care reporting system through the Virginia Healthcare Alerting and Status System (VHASS), 2-1-1 Virginia (Virginia’s statewide call center), and the Regional Healthcare Coordination Center that manages patient flow to appropriate receiving facilities. PTS gives first responders awareness of the number of casualties being managed, individual patient acuity, which unit or agency is treating or transporting individual patients, and which hospital is receiving the patients.
