Transform Northern Virginia with Interstate 66 plan
A recent report informed Northern Virginia motorists something all too familiar, even to the casual driver: Our highways and byways are some of the worst in the nation and are hindering the growth of our regional economy.
Northern Virginia is the economic engine of the commonwealth, and travel throughout the region is essential to Virginia’s progress and prosperity. Unfortunately, for far too long, we have let the perfect get in the way of the good on one of the most plagued roads in the region: Interstate 66.
When it comes to transportation, it is easy to do nothing. It is easy to maintain the status quo and to ask for more while offering few workable alternatives. However, that mind-set does very little to alleviate the congestion all drivers suffer on a daily basis.
The business community has stated for decades that I-66 inside the Beltway needs to be widened. In fact, it has been a central focus of the Fairfax Chamber’s advocacy agenda. However, that opinion has not been shared by many in Arlington politics. While only settling for the “ideal” or “perfect solution” may be well intention, the outcomes of such efforts have resulted in nothing more than gridlock and immobility.
