83 K-9 teams train in Fairfax for the ATF'S National Odor Recognition Testing

Posted Dec 10, 2015

Eighty-plus dogs and their handlers are in Fairfax, Va. tonight getting the training they need to help sniff out explosives.

Virginia State Police Trooper Andrew Arredono has been working with Bobby, an English springer spaniel, for two years.

Andrew and Bobby are just one of 83 K-9 teams from federal and local law enforcement departments in Fairfax for the AFT's National Odor Recognition Testing, also known as NORT.

The duos must remain sharp in identifying explosives and firearms anywhere they're needed: sporting events, Metro stations, bomb threats, and more.

When the dogs detect explosives, they will sit or kneel, their breathing and pace changing entirely.
