Deputy Chief Steven Shaffer, of the Boston Fire Department (MA), who was the initial Incident Commander of a nine-alarm row house fire, will discuss the line of-duty deaths of two firefighters at 298 Beacon Street and the lessons learned.
Steven Shaffer has worked in the Fire Service for 34 years, first in Brookline (MA), then with the Boston Fire Department, where he currently holds the rank of Deputy Chief. As the Chief of Training from 2018 to 2020, he developed numerous initiatives including, ASHE response training, Officer Development training, Fire Dynamics training, and Firefighter Safety and Survival training, among others. He is a member of the instructor cadre for UL’s FSRI program “Fire Dynamics Bootcamp”, and recently participated as a technical panel member for UL’s AFG grant research project “Training Fire Exposures from the Source: Developing a Risk-Benefit Framework”. Steven is also a member of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s IC-to-IC Peer Support Group, helping other Incident Commanders deal with the effects of experiencing a line of duty death.
